Nurturing Independence: Raising Kind and Capable Children

Nurturing Independene in Children
Nurturing independence – how to raise kind, resilient and capable children.

As teachers and parents, nurturing independence is a critical skill to encourage in order to raise kind, resilient and capable children.

“The child that has to do everything for himself, not only becomes more independent, but also stronger and more confident in his own abilities.” – Maria Montessori

We have an opportunity to not only focus on physical and mental wellbeing but also to instil valuable life skills. One such skill, often overlooked, is independence. By incorporating elements of self-sufficiency and self-directed learning into our schools and homes, we can empower our young people to become more successful, kind, resilient and confident individuals.

Here are some practical tips to nurture independence in your children:

1. Nurture a Growth Mindset:
  • Praise the effort, not just outcomes. This encourages a belief in the child that abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication.
  • Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Help children view setbacks as stepping stones to success! We only learn by making mistakes…
2. Offer Age-Appropriate Chores

  • Start small and gradually increase responsibilities. Begin with simple tasks and gradually introduce more complex chores.
  • Connect these tasks to real-life skills. Explain how completing these small chores contributes to the family’s well-being – thereby reinforcing the child’s centre and self-esteem. This fosters a sense of personal pride and accountability.
  • Always keep in mind the age of the child in order for the tasks to be appropriate.  For example:  Toddlers (18-36 months) can help setting toys away, dressing and undressing with minimal assistance, brushing teeth with supervision.  Pre-schoolers (3-5 years) could be dressing independently, brushing teeth, combing hair, setting and clearing the table, watering plants, dusting low surfaces, wiping spills, helping with meal preparation (e.g., stirring, pouring).   Primary School-Aged Children (5-11 years) can assist with daily household tasks, like placing dirty clothes in the hamper, helping to set the table, hang up the washing, making their bed, outdoor chores etc.

3.  Value Their Efforts
  • Acknowledge and appreciate their contributions. Positive reinforcement motivates children to continue their efforts.
  • Avoid taking over tasks. Allow the children to complete tasks independently, even if it takes longer! Be patient…
4.   Encourage Problem-Solving
  • Present challenges and guide them towards solutions. Ask open-ended questions to stimulate critical thinking which is a big part of nurturing independence.
  • Resist the urge to intervene immediately. Give children time to think through problems and find their own solutions.
  • Let them take safe and healthy risks. Teach them and trust them
5.  Model Independence
  • Demonstrate self-reliance in your own life. Let children see you making decisions, solving problems, and taking responsibility.  You’ll be surprised how much of your behaviour they mimic.
  • Encourage self-sufficiency. Teach children to rely on themselves for basic needs like dressing and eating.
        6.   Build Self-Confidence
  • Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small. Positive affirmations boost self-esteem.
  • Encourage them to try new things. Getting children to try new foods is a great way to add a sense of adventure at mealtimes.  Stepping outside their comfort zone fosters confidence.

     8.   Recognise the Milestones
  • Mark significant milestones in their journey towards independence. This reinforces their progress and motivates them to continue.
  • By incorporating these strategies into your teaching approach, you can help children develop the skills and confidence they need to become independent and successful individuals. Remember, the journey towards nurturing independence is a gradual process, so be patient and celebrate every milestone along the way!
  • Celebrate their successes, both big and small. Positive reinforcement strengthens their sense of accomplishment.

Empowering children with small chores is like planting seeds of independence and self-worth. As they tackle tasks, no matter how simple, they cultivate a sense of responsibility and accomplishment.

These small victories build their confidence, teaching them they are capable and can contribute to their environment. By fostering this sense of agency, we nurture individuals who are not only equipped for life’s challenges but also brimming with the belief in their own abilities.

Baking and cooking together is always fun. Children are much more likely to try (and like) food they have helped to prepare.
